Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I use a sports nutrition product when real food is just as good?
At OTE we believe in providing the best fuelling solutions for you; for some people using food, such as bananas and cakes, works fine but many people find that using specific sports products, such as drinks and gels, work more effectively and are much more convenient.
Your body has to work a lot harder to metabolise real food than it does to metabolise a well designed energy drink or gel. You also know exactly how much you are putting into your body were as with real food, for instance a banana, it is more difficult to estimate the content.
What does the term carbohydrate loading mean?
Carbohydrate loading is a nutrition strategy used by endurance athletes to maximize the storage of glycogen (energy) in the muscles.
Why carbohydrate powder? Why protein powder?
Using powder gives you many advantages over ready to drink options, for instance, it’s easier for you to control your carbohydrate and Kcal intake. Powder is also easier and lighter to transport, as well as having a longer shelf life, so it’s better value in the long-run.
What does Hypotonic mean?
Hypotonic solutions contain fewer molecules in solution than your body fluids. OTE Sports products are designed to be used at hypotonic concentrations.
What does the term Isotonic mean?
Isotonic is where the product contains approximately the same number of molecules in solution as your body fluids. Individuals have different concentrations of body fluids meaning Isotonic solutions are unlikely to be in balance with all individuals.
What does the term Hypertonic mean?
Normal carbonated drinks are 15-18% simple sugar solutions. This is where the solution contains more molecules than the body fluids; this solution can be heavy on the stomach and can empty very slowly.
Are OTE products suitable for both men and women?
Yes, all OTE Products are suitable for men and women.
Where can I buy OTE products?

Are OTE energy drinks healthy?
Yes, if used correctly with a healthy and varied diet.
What is in OTE energy drinks?
Carbohydrate, balanced electrolytes and natural flavourings.
Why do OTE energy drinks and gels contain carbohydrate energy?
The body provides energy by burning fats, carbohydrates and some proteins. Carbohydrate has a lower oxygen cost than fat, so more energy can be produced with a given amount of oxygen using carbohydrate as a fuel rather than fat.
The efficient use of fat is also dependent upon the availability of carbohydrate; it is often said that "fat burns in the flame of carbohydrate".
The critical factors for a good and more enjoyable sports performance will be replenishing carbohydrate and ensuring you remain hydrated. Once carbohydrate energy is used up performance can decrease by up 50%.
What is the benefit of drinking multiple energy substrates?
The benefit of using both maltodextrin and fructose is that more carbohydrate can be absorbed and delivered to working muscles. Research has shown that more carbohydrate (up to 90g per hour) can be absorbed and delivered to working muscles when using a multiple energy substrate drink, compared to using maltodextrin alone.
What are balanced electrolytes?
The addition of balanced electrolytes help to promote fluid uptake, so you remain hydrated during exercise.
How much energy drink do I need to drink?
This will vary depending on the individual (weight, current fitness), intensity and environment (temperature, indoor training). You should work on the principle of one bottle of OTE Energy drink per hour (one 43g serving in a 500ml bottle) and practice this in training, adjusting energy and fluid intake according to your fitness, intensity and environment. See our OTE Energy System for more guidelines.
