The sun graced the city for the morning of the race. First up was the British Age-Group Standard Distance National Championships as well as the British Triathlon Standard Distance Yorkshire Championships.
The swim took place in Roundhay Lake over a distance of 1500m, then after a tricky transition the bike section took the competitors out on a 36.2km lap then back into Roundhay Park. Then the final run was 10km into the city centre, finishing in millenium square on the iconic blue carpet.
Our very own Head of Marketing Nick was on the start line in Roundhay Park bright and early on Sunday morning. Not a seasoned triathlon competitor but never one to shy away from a challenge, Nick posted a very respectable time of 2:29:35. Not bad after being stood on the OTE stand all the day before!
“It was a great experience for me to race on home roads and really enjoyed the support on route and the grandstand finish in Leeds city centre.”
As for the rest of the OTE team, we were located at the finish line of the mornings race with our recovery tent. With the help of the fantastic volunteers, each competitor received their finishers bottle and could grab a refreshing OTE Hydro Tab to help kick start rehydration, a key component to recovery!
Next up was the Elite Women’s race at 1pm and OTE-Fuelled Georgia Taylor-Brown was in action. With such a strong British Team it was always going to be an exciting race for the home crowd. Georgia kept herself in contention all race keeping in touching distance of the front. A strong swim meant she could move up through the bike conserving energy. Then on the run, she made her move, and soloed into the finish 11 seconds ahead of pre-race favourite Katie Zaferes from the USA.
What a fantastic result for Georgia in her home race in front of her friends and family. Also a proud moment for us being there to congratulate her at the finish line.
Finally the last race of the day was the Elite Men, and the field this year was absolutely stacked with the world’s best. All eyes were naturally on both Alistair & Jonny Brownlee.
Confidence was high going into the race, Alistair fresh off his Euro’s win and Jonny feeling strong after a solid training block. It all started well but the Brownlee’s sadly faded coming into the run. And that’s elite sport for you, some days you’re the hammer, some days you’re the nail. But the beauty is; there’s always another race! We’re very proud to have these two guys flying the OTE flag and we know they will be back with vengeance.
What a Weekend! One we won’t forget for a very long time.
