As the end of the 2018 approaches, we look back on our OTE Fuelled Athletes fantastic performances. From triathlon to athletics, European Championships to Grand Tours; we have celebrated some outstanding results this year. Now we need your help to decide who is our Athlete of the Year.

Tom Pidcock Wins European Cyclo-Cross Championships

His first win of the 2018-19 Cyclo-cross season was a big one. Tom Pidcock of TP Racing Team took a convincing win at the U23 European Cyclocross Championships in The Netherlands in November. Beating his Belgian rival Eli Iserbyt by 30 seconds, Tom even had time to pop his signature wheelie whilst riding over the line.

This victory kick started a string of impressive wins for the young talent from Leeds which now sees him leading the World Cup series.

Alistair Brownlee steps up 70.3 World Championship Podium

In South Africa in September the Ironman 70.3 World Championships took place. OTE Fuelled Alistair Brownlee lined up as a comparative novice but ready to state his claim. Known for his dominance in the Olympic distance triathlons, Alistair’s new focus on the longer distance events may have surprised some people but some impressive victories in the lead up to the Worlds meant he should by no means be ruled out.

Coming into transition two it was still all to play for for Brownlee, Frodeno & Gomez. Eventually it was Frodeno that got the better of his rivals with Alistair finishing a very impressive second for his debut World Championships. We’re excited to see what more is to come from Alistair in this new realm of long course triathlon. Is Kona on the horizon?

Harry Tanfield Powers to Tour de Yorkshire Victory

In May, history was made when Harry Tanfield of Canyon Eisberg became the first British rider, and more importantly Yorkshire born and bred rider, to win a stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. After a day in the break away, an exciting finale saw the 6 riders just hang on until the line where Harry managed to edge out his breakaway companions to take a surprise victory on what was expected to be a sprint stage.

This was a huge day in Doncaster for the OTE Fuelled British based team and Harry himself; the perfect underdog story of which we are proud to have fuelled. Harry next year goes on to sign him first World Tour contract with Katusha Alpecin & although we won’t be fuelling him anymore we’re excited to watch his professional cycling career progress.

Georgia Taylor Brown secures World Series Bronze

In September the ITU World Triathlon Series came to a stunning close on the Gold Coast. Throughout the 8 rounds of the series, Georgia Taylor Brown had quietly been making her mark, tallying up some very impressive podium results in Edmonton, Montreal & of course Leeds, where she achieved a career best silver! In Australia Georgia pushed really hard to take 8th place on the day but more importantly this secured her fantastic 3rd in the series.

It was a fantastic break through season for Georgia & she was OTE Fuelled all the way. We’re excited to continue working with her next season.

Team New Balance Tally Up Multiple National Title

Team New Balance Manchester have been in fine winning form this year. Because they have had so many fantastic results it’s hard to choose just one, so we thought our pick would be their countless National Titles they have won this year.

  • Andrew Heyes taking the 3000m British Indoor National title in February.
  • Anna Silvander won the 1500m Swedish Indoor National title in February.
  • Ciara Mageean has won multiple titles including 800m, 1500m & cross country Irish National Titles.

Check out our video of our day with Team New Balance Manchester to find out more about the team.

Avancini crowned World MTB XC Marathon Champion

Henrique Avancini of the Cannondale Factory Racing was crowned the World XC Marathon Champion in September. He completed the gruelling 102km route in Auronzo, Italy in a time of 5:08:28, beating Austria’s Daniel Geismayr by just two seconds! He also become the first Brazilian MTBer in history to win a world title, which made the victory all the more sweeter.

This result topped off a fine year for the Cannondale Factory Racing Team where they finished as the season’s best team in the UCI World Cup Series. They led the team ranking from start to finish.

EF Education First - Drapac p/b Cannondale Multiple Stage Wins at the Vuelta Espana

It was a memorable Grand Tour for EF Education First – Drapac p/b  Cannondale this year at the Vuelta. Early on in the race Simon Clarke took Stage 5 from a small group of 3 that remained from a larger break of 25.

This victory was then followed up later in the Vuelta by Michael Wood who took an emotional victory on Stage 17, of which he dedicated to his still born son that died two months earlier.
