What’s In Your Bottle? A Complete Guide to OTE Drinks

What’s In Your Bottle? A Complete Guide to OTE Drinks

At OTE, our range of drinks is always expanding, and we want to make it easy to keep up with what we offer and how our products can help you. Our drinks range features a variety of products, each with different qualities to help you get the most out of your exercise. Want to make the perfect choice when filling your bottle? Let’s help you work out which of our OTE drinks is right for you.

OTE HYDRO TABS

First, let’s take a look at our famous Hydro Tabs. These tablets are the ultimate solution for quickly and effectively rehydrating the body, with natural flavours and sweeteners for that essential splash of flavour. Simply drop one tablet into 500ml of water and enjoy a great-tasting way to stay hydrated.

What Do Electrolyte Tablets Do?

A common misconception about Hydro Tabs and electrolyte tablets in general is that they will fuel exercise. Containing next to no calories (a mere 8kcal per tab), our Hydro Tabs primarily aid hydration by providing the body with a balance of electrolytes, which:

  1. Replaces salts lost during sweating.
  2. Aids the uptake of fluid into the system more efficiently than just water alone.

The primary electrolytes lost through sweat during exercise are sodium and chloride (with smaller amounts of magnesium, potassium, and calcium also lost), and each plays a key role in the body. Sodium, for example, is important for maintaining the body’s extracellular fluid volume, which in turn affects blood volume and pressure.

Maintaining a simple balance between the intake and excretion of these electrolytes is vital for performance. Even as little as 2% loss of body weight due to dehydration has been shown to impair performance, so Hydro Tabs can be pivotal for achieving your best.

When to Take Electrolyte Tablet

Our Hydro Tabs are most effective at particular times of your workout, so we advise using them:

  • During hot and humid weather, to mitigate the extra sweat your body will produce.
  • During low-intensity exercise or short sessions that require no fuel but cause the body to sweat.
  • Alongside energy bars like our Duo Bars or Anytime Bars during longer training sessions.
  • During pre-event preparation, ensure you start fully hydrated.

OTE ENERGY DRINKS

They’ve been a vital part of our range from the very beginning, but our naturally flavoured energy drinks aren’t like every other on the market. They’re pH-neutral, which means they’re kind on your stomach when hydrating on the move. We know that compromising on ingredient quality can cause an acidic environment in the stomach, and the resulting discomfort is all too often associated with sports nutrition. That’s why we prioritise a pH-neutral formula, so whether you're training or racing, you get the carbs you need without the discomfort.

Are Energy Drinks Good for Hydration?

Each 500ml bottle of OTE energy drink contains 40g of carbohydrates and a balanced electrolyte profile. This means one bottle can quickly and effectively replace your energy and salt stores. For training sessions longer than 90 minutes, during which intensity is moderate to high, our energy drinks offer the perfect solution for keeping the body hydrated and ready for more.

With natural flavouring, our energy drinks don’t have an overly sweet or sickly flavour, which can be more important than we first think. It’s a little-known fact that our taste buds change as we exercise, causing us to crave saltier flavours. By keeping the flavouring more neutral, we remove this potential barrier to fuelling.

When to Use OTE Energy Drinks

Our energy drinks are most effective at particular times of your workout, so we advise using them:

  • During training sessions that are longer than 90 minutes.
  • In instances when energy intake is important, but you struggle to eat due to a lack of hunger or a lack of available lightweight options.
  • As part of a fuelling plan during competition preparation.
  • Alongside an OTE energy gel to achieve the recommended 60g of carbohydrates per hour.

PROTEIN AND RECOVERY DRINKS

Preparation and performance are so important, but we know that recovery plays an equally important part in athletic achievements. Workouts don’t finish when you stop sweating, but instead when recovery has begun, and that’s why our protein and recovery drinks are so integral to our range.

Our protein and recovery drinks offer an all-in-one solution with the perfect blend of complex carbohydrates for energy restoration, high-quality whey protein (or vegan protein) for muscle repair, and vital electrolytes for rehydration. Together, these ingredients ensure the body has what it needs to rest, recover, and be ready for your next workout or race.

When to Use Protein and Recovery Drinks

For the best results, we recommend taking a recovery drink within 30 minutes of finishing your workout. Your body will be most receptive to nutrient absorption, glycogen replenishment, and muscle repair during this time, but you can still take one up to 1 hour after your workout if you can’t do it straight away.

OTE SUPER CARBS

We often get asked if doubling the serving of our normal energy drink is the same as one serving of Super Carbs. The answer is no, because there is much more to these high-performance products that make them such a reliable source of hydration and electrolytes.

Our Super Carbs drinks have been specifically formulated to be mixed with water and consumed like a regular energy drink. The difference lies in when these drinks reach the stomach acid, as their special formulation forms a gel, enabling quick transport of the drink (and more carbs/energy) into the intestine for absorption.

These drinks are the high-performance option of the OTE drinks range. In just one 500ml bottle of Super Carbs, you can get a massive 80g of carbohydrates - that's double that of the energy drink - plus essential electrolytes.

When to Use Super Carbs Drinks

It’s important to weigh up whether you really need such a big carbohydrate intake, so we would advise using Super Carbs when:

  • The intensity of your workout is high with a significant increase in energy expenditure.
  • The weather conditions are cooler and you may not need to drink as much to remain hydrated, but still need energy.
  • The time available to take on fluid/energy is restricted, such as in team sports or endurance events.
