Hit the Ground Running: 5 Essential Tips for Beginners

Whether we’re looking to take on a trail run or a road run, getting started with running isn’t always easy. Where do you run, and for how long? We can have so many questions and doubts that stop us from running, but that doesn’t need to be the case.

At OTE Sports, we know all the tips and tricks for shaking off nerves and getting out there. If you’re a beginner, let us walk you through our best advice for getting started, plus our guidance on planning and fuelling your new running schedule.

Getting Going: How to Start Running for Beginners in 5 Steps

Sometimes, the things preventing us from running aren’t as big or scary as we think. Trying some of the following tips can help you to overcome these doubts and get started on your running journey.

Tip #1: Find the Right Shoes

Many beginner runners are guilty of trying to run in an old, worn-out pair of shoes that aren’t designed for running. Having shoes designed to cushion the sole and stay light and bouncy throughout a run is really important for reducing blisters and discomfort, so one of the most helpful things you can do is get yourself a good pair of shoes!

If you don’t know where to begin, head to your local running or sports shop and try a few pairs on. You might also have a gait analysis to find a pair that matches your running style. Everyone is different, so it’s important to find the shoes that suit you and your feet best.

Tip #2: Start Out Slow

Many beginners think they need to run for a long time to feel they have achieved something, but that's not true. Instead of pushing yourself to run for 20 or 30 minutes straight away, try jogging for a minute, then walking for a minute. If you do that 10 times, you will accumulate 20 minutes total and 10 minutes of running time.

Many beginners who try to run for 20 minutes straight away can become disheartened when they feel exhausted after a few minutes. Without building up the fitness to run, this is an inevitable obstacle, so starting with shorter running bursts provides an easier route to building stamina.

Tip #3: Give It Time

As with many other hobbies, getting into the flow of running takes time. It won’t be easy at first, but we recommend giving it 6 weeks to help running become part of your routine. It’s important not to let yourself get disheartened during this time, as there will be plenty of days when you feel great and days when you feel more tired. It’s all about consistency and trusting that it will get easier.

Throughout these 6 weeks, we recommend running 2-3 times a week and recovering in between. This schedule will give your body time to rest and adapt to regular exercise without taking too much time throughout your week.

Tip #4: Slowly Introduce Challenge

Just as when things are too difficult, we can easily lose interest in running when things become too easy. An important part of everyone’s running journey is the gradual increase in challenge that comes with becoming fitter and able to run further for longer.

Once running becomes part of your routine, set some challenges for yourself and commit to them. Whether you’re building up to a 5-mile run at the end of 6 weeks or signing up for a park run for motivation, setting goals keeps running fresh and interesting. It is also the best way to see your progress.

Tip #5: Run With Others

Everything is more fun with friends, so one of the best ways to motivate beginners is to get involved in a local running group or have a running buddy. By committing to being part of something bigger than yourself, you find it easier to run regularly and enjoy the experience.

Talking to like-minded people or having a running buddy also helps when it comes to talking about the obstacles of running and finding the motivation to overcome them. A problem shared is a problem halved, so sharing the experience with others is a really great way to get started.

Devising the Ultimate Running Plan for Beginners

As we’ve already mentioned, beginner runners should take it slow and gradually build up to longer runs over the first 6 weeks of their journey. Everyone has to start somewhere, but what should these first 6 weeks look like? If you’re looking for inspiration, here is a useful framework to inspire your running:

Week 1 10 x 1-minute run/1-minute walk (x3)
Week 2 10 x 2-minute run/1-minute walk (x3)
Week 3 8 x 3-minute run/1-minute walk (x3)
Week 4 6-minute run/1-minute walk, 5-minute run/1-minute walk, 4-minute run/1-minute walk, 3-minute run/1-minute walk (x3)
Week 5 2 x 10-minute run/1-minute walk (x3)
Week 6 2 x 14-minute run/1-minute walk (x3)

Fuelling is Everything: An Intro to Running Nutrition for Beginners

Having the motivation to run is only half the battle. What’s equally important is giving your body the fuel it needs to perform at its best. At OTE Sports, we understand this better than anyone, and that’s why we offer the ultimate nutrition products to start your running journey. Here are some of our staple products you’ll want to consider:

  • Running Gels: Choose from our standard or Super Gels for a vital carbohydrate boost during your run. Running burns the body’s glycogen stores, but topping up with our 20g or 40g gels helps preserve them longer, extending your stamina.
  • Running Drinks: Running depletes the body’s vital electrolytes, and restoring them is easy with our Hydro Tabs, which transform water into the ultimate rehydration drink. Hydration is pivotal to sustaining running performance, so our running drinks are the perfect pre- and post-run top-up.
  • Running Chews: The ultimate energy boost on the go, our chews deliver 23g of carbohydrates in a lightweight, easy-to-digest snack. Providing both electrolytes and energy, chews can be eaten on the go, making them essential for longer, more difficult runs.
